Emanuel beats rivals to become next Chicago mayor

CHICAGO – Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel was elected mayor of Chicago on Tuesday, easily overwhelming five rivals to take the helm of the nation's third-largest city as it prepares to chart a new course without the retiring Richard M. Daley.

With 98 percent of precincts reporting, Emanuel had trounced all his opponents with 55 percent of the vote — a margin that allowed him to avoid an April runoff. He needed more than 50 percent to win outright.

It was the city's first mayoral race in more than 60 years without an incumbent on the ballot and the first in more than two decades without Daley among the candidates. Daley and his father have led Chicago for more than 43 out of the last 56 years.

Emanuel called the victory "humbling" and thanked Daley for his lifetime of service, saying the outgoing mayor had "earned a special place in our hearts and our history."

But he added: "We have not won anything until a kid can go to school thinking of their studies and not their safety. Until the parent of that child is thinking about their work and not where they are going to find work, we have not won anything."
[ For complete coverage of politics and policy, go to Yahoo! Politics ]

Reginald Bachus, the 51-year-old pastor of a West Side church who voted for Emanuel, said the next four years will be "a very critical time for Chicago.

"We really need a mayor who has vision. It's my personal opinion everyone else would have been a manager, and I think Rahm has vision," Bachus said.

The other major candidates — former Chicago schools president Gery Chico, former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun and City Clerk Miguel del Valle — had hoped to force a runoff that would have extended the campaign for six more weeks. But they were no match for Emanuel's momentum and money.

Chico had 25 percent of the vote compared with 9 percent for both del Valle and Braun. Two other lesser-known candidates each got about 1 percent.

The campaign began last fall when Daley — with an ailing wife, six terms under his belt and a future in which Chicago's fiscal challenges loomed large — announced he would not seek re-election.

Emanuel, a 51-year-old married father of three, will be the city's first Jewish mayor and is a well-known figure in national Democratic politics. He worked for two presidents and served three terms representing Chicago's North Side in the House of Representatives.

He's also known as an abrasive, often profane political operative with a famous take-no-prisoners style that was even parodied on "Saturday Night Live."

But Emanuel was on his best behavior on the campaign trail, where his swagger and hard edges gave way to unusual calm.

He visited all 50 wards and made regular stops at all the city's elevated train stations. He talked confidently about local issues — mass transit, bike paths and after-school programs — and refused to be goaded.

His lead in the polls grew and so did his campaign, becoming a $13 million juggernaut.

All three of his main rivals tried to put Emanuel on the defensive, casting him as an outsider and questioning his temperament. But he stayed above the fray, and his celebrity made it hard for the criticism to gain any traction.

Emanuel had just been elected to his fourth term when he resigned in 2008 to work for fellow Chicagoan President Barack Obama. It was a job he held until he resigned in October 2010 to run for mayor. He had also worked as a top aide to Bill Clinton.

Obama quickly sent his congratulations to the mayor-elect. "As a Chicagoan and a friend, I couldn't be prouder," the president said in a statement. "Rahm will be a terrific mayor for all the people of Chicago."

Emanuel's relationship with Obama won him votes from a number of people who believed his White House connections would be an advantage.

Obama political adviser David Axelrod said Chicago would get "whatever the city's entitled to. ... And I don't think Rahm will leave one dollar on the table."

During his time in Congress, Emanuel served as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and was credited with leading Democrats to victory in 2006, when they won the majority in the House after a dozen years in the minority.

The new mayor faces a daunting series of challenges, including fixing the city's finances, addressing underfunded employee pensions and confronting a shrinking urban population.

Emanuel will have to decide on a strategy for improving the city's dire finances and may come under pressure to raise taxes and cut services and public employee benefits, though those measures would be politically difficult.

Daley has been criticized for allowing the city to spend beyond its means, and Chicago was not spared the pain of the economic downturn of the last few years.

The city's inspector general's office warned in October that Chicago's annual deficit was effectively more than $1 billion when combining recent budget deficits with the spending increases the city would need to properly fund its pension system.

The new mayor will also have to find new leadership for city schools and a new police superintendent. All the candidates have talked about wanting to replace Jody Weis with someone who has a stronger focus on neighborhood policing.

Emanuel's win capped off a campaign that also included an unsuccessful legal challenge to knock him off the ballot over the city's requirement that candidates live in the city for at least one year prior to running.

More than two dozen people challenged Emanuel's eligibility because he had lived in Washington for nearly two years while working for Obama, and he had rented out his Chicago home.

Emanuel moved back to Chicago in October after Daley announced he would not seek a seventh term.

The matter went all the way to the Illinois Supreme Court, which overturned a lower-court ruling that briefly threw Emanuel off the ballot.

But all that turmoil seemed far behind Tuesday as Emanuel paid tribute to his supporters.

"Thank you, Chicago, for this humbling victory. ... You sure know how to make a guy feel at home."

NBA 2011 All Star Game recap:

Here's a recap of the NBA 2011 All-Star game courtesy of ESPN.com :

We haven't had a Kobe versus LeBron battle in June yet, but we got a preview of what it might look like here in February. The West's wild 148-143 win in the 2011 All-Star Game at Staples Center -- the highest-scoring regulation game in history provided a harbinger of how exciting such a showdown might be as each dominated long stretches of the game.

And that's where the fun begins. Because when you look past all the spectacle of the NBA All-Star Game, the really interesting part is when it gets a little nitty-gritty. Combining the Kobe-LeBron battle with the close finish, and spiking it with lingering Lakers-Celtics bitterness and the Staples Center location, all the necessary ingredients were there.

More on the L.A.-Boston animus in a bit, but let's start with the finish. There were only two players apiece on the court from Los Angeles and Miami during the stretch run, but it turned into a Lakers-Heat battle anyway with the final score serving as a sort of proxy war for the MVP honors between Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. And unlike most years, the crowd had a genuine preference, pulling for the West enough that at times it felt like a "road" game for the East.

Bryant ultimately prevailed, with game highs of 37 points and 14 rebounds. But not before James almost single-handedly brought the East back from a 17-point deficit with a series of full-speed end-to-end bursts that ended with him hurtling toward the basket and drawing fouls, scoring or both. James had 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in the fourth quarter alone, bringing his side within two before Kevin Durant quashed the rally with back-to-back jumpers.

James finished with only the second triple-double in All-Star Game history with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists; Michael Jordan was the first. Unfortunately, his lone error in the stretch run may have been the costliest -- down four with 45 seconds left, he passed up an open 3-pointer to kick the ball to Miami teammate Chris Bosh, who missed a wild 3 of his own that effectively ended the East's rally.

However, within the East comeback lay another interesting subplot the dogs-and-cats-playing-with-each-other aspect of four Celtics on the bench cheering enthusiastically as LeBron blew up in the fourth quarter. Leading the charge was Kevin Garnett, who was up off the bench making typical maniacal Garnett faces, pointing out defensive coverages and generally cheerleading.

"That's just KG," said East coach and Boston coach Doc Rivers. "He wanted to win. You don't really know how guys are going to interchange ... but it's really neat trying to adjust what the people interact and I think you do learn a little bit about different guys."

"Actually we all got into a fight in the locker room before the game, arguing and stuff," cracked Paul Pierce. "What did you want us to do? We're on the same team. It's the All-Star Game."

Rivers also did his Miami rivals a favor by immediately calling a timeout when Dwyane Wade came up hobbling after stepping on Deron Williams' foot. Wade, who had been troubled by his right ankle in recent games and reinjured it on the play, didn't return but said he could have if it had been the regular season.

Although the four Celtics -- Pierce, Garnett, Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen were bit players in the game itself, they were front and center at the start. At times it felt that we were back for Game 8 of the 2010 NBA Finals. L.A. fans heartily booed the Boston foursome in introductions, although they saved their worst vitriol for Miami's LeBron James. When four Celtics checked into the game for the East late in the first quarter, at the same time Bryant and Gasol were on the floor for the West, it seemed the L.A.-Boston subplot would rule the day. On cue, the crowd cheered when Pierce and Allen each air-balled jumpers.

"You knew they would not get a rousing ovation," said Rivers. "I think our guys expected it. [They] got a good laugh out of it."

Kobe Bryant avoided the Chasedown King this time.
Of course, it wasn't just the Lakers, Heat and Celtics out there. Kevin Durant made two game-icing free throws with 5.2 seconds left allowing Bryant to leave to a huge ovation from the Staples Center crowd and finished with 34 points. And the East's surge got a major boost from Amare Stoudemire, who scored 15 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter. Interestingly, Stoudemire was matched up against potential future teammate Carmelo Anthony to start the game. However, neither made a huge impact until Amare's late burst.

Nonetheless, the story of this one was Kobe doing just enough early to offset LeBron late. Bryant exploded early with a 21-point first half, going retro on a baseline drive that led to a twisting reverse jam and later, to the delight of the locals, dunking on James.

"I wanted to see if I could avoid the LeBron chase-down," said Bryant. "So I just tried to be quick ... I kind of snuck it by him."

Bryant achieved his point total by playing, how can we say this ... aggressively. Especially in the first half, he stopped the ball to look for his shot every time he caught it. Bryant admitted he knew coming in what the record was for points in the game (42 by Wilt Chamberlain in 1961) and had hopes of breaking it before the home crowd until he ran out of gas down the stretch.

"He wanted to get the MVP," said Stoudemire. "He was not passing the ball, at all. But that's Kobe."

You could tell it was Bryant's night when he missed a free throw midway through the fourth quarter and it bounced straight back to him off the back rim, leaving an open 15-foot jumper that he drained easily. It was one of his few jumpers, as Bryant showed shades of his game as a much younger player by making repeated forays to the rim. Eleven of his 14 field goals came from inside five feet.

However, the fortuitous bounce off the free throw provided his only points in the final stanza. It was his teammate Gasol who helped hold off the East's charge, blocking a Derrick Rose shot at one end and tipping in a Bryant miss at the other to seal the win after Durant's jumpers had provided some breathing room. For his efforts in preserving Bryant's MVP trophy, Gasol got to spend 10 minutes on the podium with Bryant without being asked a single question.

It was also Bryant's record-setting fourth All-Star Game MVP award, tying the mark held by former Hawks big man Bob Pettit.

"He played great," James said. "He definitely deserved it."

Whether he would also prevail in a June matchup remains purely a matter of conjecture. Maybe, just maybe, this is the year we'll find out.

here's the "Black Mamba" himself after winning MVP:

New York the Victor in trade battle to acquire Carmelo Anthony

Couple days late posting this but whatever lol.

The Denver Nuggets have finally completed their long-awaited trade to send Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks.

The Knicks are sending Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, the Knicks’ 2014 first-round pick, two second-round picks New York acquired from the Golden State Warriors in the David Lee sign-and-trade and $3 million. The Knicks will also trade Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry’s expiring contract to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who will send Corey Brewer to the Nuggets. The Knicks will receive Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams and Renaldo Balkman.
The Nuggets requested on Saturday that the Knicks also include center Timofey Mozgov in their trade package and New York complied.

“I’m extremely happy for ‘Melo,” said Anthony’s agent, Leon Rose. “We are very appreciative to the Denver Nuggets organization for their efforts in assisting ‘Melo to get to New York. ‘Melo is excited and looking forward to playing for the Knicks.”

The Nuggets want to reroute two Knicks to the New Jersey Nets as part of a separate deal, including Felton and Mozgov, sources said. The Nets badly want to get rid of Devin Harris and have discussed a three-team with Denver and Dallas that would send Harris to the Mavericks, and bring Felton and Mozgov to New Jersey, sources said.

The Nets are considering sending Harris and Troy Murphy to Portland for Andre Miller and Joel Przybilla, but sources say that deal’s on the backburner. New Jersey would prefer Felton over Miller, sources say.

Nuggets president Josh Kroenke and general manager Masai Ujiri had initially preferred the Nets’ offer for Anthony, which was built around rookie forward Derrick Favors and four first-round draft picks, but Anthony was unwilling to commit to signing a contract extension with the Nets.

Nuggets coach George Karl had pushed team officials to make the deal with the Knicks over a straight trade with the Nets because it would better position the Nuggets to contend for the playoffs this season, a source with knowledge of Denver’s plans said.

Congrats to Melo for making the move back home ! But you woulda got a Championship with the BULLS sooner !!! lol

Hot or Not ??? The Air Jordan V "Wolf-Grey"

The Air Jordan V was designed by Tinker Hatfield and inspired Mustang fighter jets. The upper translucent ‘netting’ offered a lightweight advantage, and the oversized, 3M-reflective tongue was a used as a huge billboard of sorts for the Jumpman logo. But enough about the past: dropping on May 14th at Jordan Brand retailers is the all-new ‘Wolf Grey’ colorway of the Air Jordan V. Grey color schemes have been a popular one for Jordans in the past so there’s no mystery that these will be a big hit once they release. A mid-May drop means you’ll have one more neck-breaking item before school lets out and another pair for your summer-time rotation. Are these a must-have for you? Check out the images and let us know... Hot or Not ?!?!?!

Update: CIARA’S SAYS SHE WASN’T DROPPED FROM JIVE; RELEASES LETTER TO FANS

Last week, rumors were circulating about Ciara and her status with her record label, Jive Records. Today, the 25 year-old singer/dancer set the record straight on her Facebook page and shared her thoughts in a letter written to her devoted fans. In the note, she disclosed her frustration with her records sales and working with her home label. Ciara also hinted that she hopes to leave the Clive Davis empire and find a music home elsewhere:

TO MY FANS:
This week the net has been a buzz of the rumor that I have been dropped from my label. At this point that rumor is false.. It is true that I have asked and I pray that my label will release me. I have had some great times and success with my label, but sometimes like all great things, its at that point where I feel we don’t share the same views on who I am as a artist. The past two albums have been very frustrating for me. At times there were songs I chose to lead a project and I was ignored! This project, I even tried to get Gimmie Dat started I spent tens of thousands of my own money only to hear the radio pds tell me my label didn’t want the song played.I even spent more than one hundred thousand dollars out of my pocket on the video to bring my vision to it and still no label support. I do understand that some labels are not financially supporting their artists and I have become one of them… You, my fans, know that I strive to do my best to deliver to my you the best songs and creative vision I possibly can. I’m dedicated to my music, performance and to my fans! I’ve tried to be a team player with the label only to have compromised what I truly believed.. And was not given the right opportunity to promote and inform my fans of the release of this album..I have so much of me as a artist I still want to give to the world and my fans. A release would allow me to go be creative with people who care and understand me as a artist. In a short time, I will be able to bring to you a new music energy and a visual excitement! Thank you so much for standing by me through the good, bad, and the confusion. I love you all.
Welp. There you have it. We're Wishing her the best in her business decisions.

The Dream new album news

a couple of days ago, The Dream announced that he is working on a fourth studio album, but now he’s revealed some more information about what’s going down.
Originally, he said that he was going to title the album Love Affair (all his previous albums had ‘love’ in the title), but he has swapped to the title The Love, IV.
“This album is gonna have more features, which is unique for me, ’cause I usually don’t carry a lot of features,” he told MTV News. “I’m calling it out now. I’m cashing in my chips. I’m gonna try to get everybody, Wayne, Kanye, Jay, Drake, Mary, anybody that I’ve worked with or loaned a hand to, I’m trying to get on my album.”
Usually, The Dream works exclusively with producers Los Da Mystro and Tricky Stewart, but this time he plans to get in the studio with producers Dr. Dre, Polow Da Don, Carlos McKinney and Kanye West. Originally, he announced that the album would be out by August, however he’s set his eyes on June 7th for release.

Here's the latest vid's you can catch of the Dream:

Hot or Not ??? Nike Air Max Griffey 1 ‘Cincinnati’ colorway

The secret ingredient in Cincinnati-style chili is cinnamon but this Cincy-inspired sneaker looks like it’s covered in cayenne. The Nike Air Max Griffey 1 ‘Cincinnati’ represents the second half of Junior’s career when he chose to be closer to his family by signing with the hometown Reds. These stay true to OG form by featuring 24 instead of the 30 Griffey wore in honor of his father’s time with the same team some twenty years earlier. It’s kinda perfect really, the shoe being ‘off’ by a tiny margin in the way the Kid’s career seemed to turn after he left Seattle. A bittersweet retrospective on perhaps the greatest baseball player of the last two decades told by an undeniably sick retro trainer, the Sport Red AGM1 will hit retailers on February 26th

So we ask you guys & gals, HOT OR NOT ???

Artist Spotlight: Miguel

Ok so here on BLVDAVE we would like to introduce you to our new feature we gonna do called "Artist Spotlight" . The 1st artist to appear in our spotlight is MIGUEL. It doesn’t happen often, But every once in a while a young artist comes along who has the chops, vision, range and creative conviction to change the game. Miguel is among that chosen few.
Let’s start with his voice: The Los Angeles, California, native has one of those raw honey falsettos that oozes into your soul and stays there, even after the music stops. Billboard Magazine exclaims, Miguel, 24, “offers both the sweetness of Babyface and the passion of R. Kelly.”
Then there’s Miguel’s pen game. This Scorpio doesn’t just write lyrics. He paints aural portraits—of his loves, his heartbreaks and his kinky little fantasies. “To me, the best songs are the ones that show how vulnerable, how human we all are,” says Miguel. Penning Asher Roth’s “His Dream,” Mary J. Blige and Musiq’s “If U Leave,” and co-writing on Usher’s Raymond V Raymond album, Miguel says, “For me, writing is like making steak and potatoes into a Happy Meal—how do I work in that substance but keep you coming back for more?” That being said, you guys be the judge. Below is a video for Miguel's latest single "Sure Thing" and a performance of his on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" singing "All I want is you" . Enjoy !!

Hot or Not ?!? Supra Skytop II ‘Kamikaze’s Revenge'

Just by the very nature of what the word is expressing, a ‘kamikaze’ should be a one-and-done kinda deal. And from the looks of the above pictured release, it’s clear Reebok isn’t the only brand reaching into its archives to find inspiration from an earlier mission. The Supra Skytop II ‘Kamikaze’s Revenge’ is based on 2008′s Skytop ‘Comakaze’, itself borrowing heavily from the Crown brand’s initial collaboration with Brooklyn Projects. So you get the zebra-striped overlay common to both of those atop the black and red Comakaze Skytop motif and applied to the Skytop II. A nice little history lesson on the brand, Supra‘s latest special edition will release in a 413-pair limited run this Saturday, exclusively at Factory 413.

Whats your verdict: Hot or Not ?!?!?

The Cavs could look to trade most of their valuable pieces

The Cleveland Cavaliers are a terrible basketball team of historic proportions, what with their record-breaking 26-game losing streak and the general stink that comes with losing a one-time franchise savior. They're painful to watch, and most people probably wouldn't complain if they just forfeited the rest of the season.

In a way, that might be exactly what they're about to do. While better days are surely ahead, the Cavs rightfully don't seem convinced that it will happen with this group, so they're looking to make a few trades. According to Ken Berger of CBSSports.com (via PBT), they might be ready to trade as many people as possible:

Hornets GM Dell Demps is said to be seeking a big man who can give New Orleans a little more post presence on the offensive end, and executives are openly wondering if Demps will be so bold as to chase Cleveland's Antawn Jamison(notes). [...]

The Cavs are aggressively testing the waters to see what kind of assets they can expect to accumulate by volunteering to use their $14.6 million trade exception from LeBron's departure as a parking lot for other teams' unwanted contracts. Cleveland is seeking to use that cap space to acquire draft picks and young players -- a sound strategy, especially considering that the Cavs can use all the room without putting themselves in luxury-tax jeopardy. [...]

Sources say the Bulls and Celtics are widely expected to make a move before the deadline, and each is seeking wing help. The Cavs' Anthony Parker(notes) would be an ideal fit in both places. [...]

The Hawks are looking for guard help, and sources say they may be interested in the Cavs' Ramon Sessions. The feeling among rival execs is that the Hawks may be willing to spend up to or perhaps even a bit beyond the luxury-tax threshold if there's a deal that would significantly improve their chances in a playoff series with Boston, Orlando or Miami.

Swizz Beatz x Reebok Partnership Officially Announced @ Project, Las Vegas

Reebok released a series of Shawn Kemp signatures in the mid ’90s under the Kamakaze name. They also dropped a 2K10 update last year, so while the design is clearly similar, it’s a bit confusing that the as yet unnamed pictured sneaker will also be the Reebok Kamikaze.
Considerably more clear is that this is Swizz Beatz’ Reebok sneaker and their partnership was officially unleashed at a recent event in Las Vegas. Swizzy showed up in a Jean-Michel Basquiat tee and showed off the new shoes at Project in Sin City, including a crazy pink snakeskin pair made in commemoration of this year’s Grammy Awards. A release date for the Swizz Beatz x Reebok shoe has yet to be announced...
