Ronnie Fieg: The Midas of Footwear

Mike P here.

While many of you “sneakerheads” are fixated on your Jordans, there is a new powerhouse in the sneaker world that has come up right under your nose.  Apart from most people in NYC who have already been aware of this phenom, I find it to be my civic duty to let the readers of BLVD AVE know what they are possibly missing.

That was the NYC native, Ronnie Fieg, on his last trip to Chicago back in 2010, talking about his aspiration for KITH.  Ronnie first opened Kith in Brooklyn a few years back with a simple idea in mind: open a mens only shoe store that with pieces that look good, are only made from the highest quality material, and are sold at an affordable price. Maintaining these principles seems to be a rarity around the sneaker world as of late, which is why it is apparent that Fieg and Kith have been killing the game.

Both Kith locations (Manhattan and Brooklyn) are connected to Atrium, a staple denim shop on NYC.  His idea was to allow customers to buy a pair of jeans, then walk through the door adjoining the two stores and purchase a pair of shoes or boots to go along with them. His vision seems to be working out pretty well considering the popularity and ever-increasing hype of everything he touches.  He is the Midas of this world.

Not to mention Kith has started manufacturing a few apparel pieces as a part of their Kith NYC “Red Label.” Earlier this summer they dropped a collection of jackets and bottoms all featuring some kind of camo or animal print, which, like everything else he touches, sold out instantly.  He has a new release under their Red Label dropping this Friday (7/20) featuring a solid run of shorts.  You can also expect a killer collaboration with Herschel Supply Co. dropping the same day.

As Ronnie’s business plan continues to prosper, he is able to venture deeper into the fashion world.  He helped release the “Just Us” Chelsea frame by Tina Catherine last week and, once again, struck gold.

Some of Ronnie’s most recognizable designs are on the Asics Gel Saga, the Gel Lyte III, and the GT-II.  This summer he also did a very special collaboration with New Balance in the form of a 999, dubbed the “Steel Blue.” Here are a few of the colorways he released that sold out within seconds online and had heads camping out days in advance:

Check out kithnyc.com for all kinds of goodies.  He constantly keeps in stock his collection by Sebago, a boat shoe company which never disappoints, as well as classic silhouettes from New Balance, Puma, Adidas, Nike, and many, many more.

Be sure to keep you eye out for these bad boys:

The Asics Gel Saga "Neptunes" due to release sometime later this summer.
If you haven’t heard of Ronnie Fieg, get your head out of the ground.  You’ll surely hear of him soon.

Games on the AVE: Gamespot Reviews Spec Ops: The Line

Also available on PS3

Spec Ops: The Line is a game rife with contrast. In the sandstorm-wracked city of Dubai, refugees huddle in crude shanties erected in the opulent atriums of luxury hotels, and soldiers construct rough outposts in swanky rooftop clubs. On these makeshift battlefields, most of your time is spent casually gunning down hundreds of enemy combatants, but your squadmates still argue passionately over the value of one anonymous virtual life. Mechanically, Spec Ops is an utterly commonplace third-person shooter, but narratively, it strives to raise philosophical questions and put you outside of your comfort zone. These contrasts create some intriguing moments, but they are too often muddled by mediocre execution. The environmental design is one of the highlights. A fierce sandstorm has left Dubai with an entirely new geography, one defined by sliding dunes and sandy canyons. Trapped by the swirling debris, the citizens are forced to create makeshift shelters amid the towering skyscrapers, carving out settlements in the luxurious wreckage. Walk just past the glittering peacock statues and extravagant mosaics to find rickety cots, shabby walls, and dirty sheets.

A battalion of American soldiers have taken up residence here too, following their failed evacuation attempt, and their military outposts add an ominous air of conflict to the landscape. The artifacts of the aborted exodus tell a story too; cars are abandoned, belongings have been left behind in a hurry, and desperate pleas for help adorn the walls.
These striking scenes are punctuated by the politically charged graffiti that some stranded artist has created around the city, anonymous accusations that target the suffering of the people (smiling images of hotel guests with their eyes hollowed out) and those who helped exacerbate an already bad situation (a skeletal news anchor holding a smiling yellow puppet). The disparate architectural and artistic threads intertwine to create a fascinating landscape, one that is a pleasure to explore despite the merely decent production values.
